Understanding How Your Tire Sizing Code Reads Is Important When Buying New Tires

At some point you will without a doubt need to replace the tires on your vehicle. When that happens, it is beneficial to you to be able to read the sizing nomenclature on the tire's sidewalls. If you have never done this before it can seem a bit intimidating. But once you figure out how to break the code down you will see that it is not such a big deal.

To give an example, if a tire's sizing code reads as P205/55R16 then that breaks down as:
  • P - Passenger vehicle type tire.
  • 205 - Tire width. In this case, the tire would be 205 millimeters wide.
  • 55 - Aspect ratio. The height of this tire would be 55% of its width.
  • R - Radial construction.
  • 16 - Wheel diameter. This tire would fit on a 16" wheel.
